Shisendo, 2016

On Thursday morning, we had a “free” morning – no scheduled activities for Don’s field trip until our walk along the Philosopher’s Path to Ginkaku-ji.

So our family decided to 1) get some much needed extra sleep – we stayed in bed until 7! and 2) go to Shisendo, the temple where Don and I got engaged in 2011.

Daddy was too tall for Aardvark’s trademarked 3-fingered-bunny-ear-move, so this cutie just did them to herself.

This kid loves a good ritual cleansing & purifying.

She’s got the routine down: she knows which order to wash her hands in and she doesn’t forget to cleanse the scoop before replacing it.

And she insists on doing it over and over at every shrine and temple that has one.

Jizo! I think Jizo is Aardvark’s favorite Buddhist bodhisattva. One of mine, too.

Seconds after I took the photo on the left, Don proposed.

5 years later our little family returned to the spot.

(And apparently I learned how to frame a shot a bit better in the intervening time.)

Thanks for being such a great husband and dad, Don!

Sorry for the mush, everyone else!
